TIMMINS, ON – The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is pleased to grant the O’Gorman High School Athletics Department with $2705 from the Municipal Accommodations Tax (MAT) Tourism Grant. The grant will help support overnight tourist visits, and enhance and develop tourism experiences during the 30th Annual Sister Fay Girls Basketball Tournament taking place on October 28th and 29th.
The tournament will showcase 12 teams in each Junior and Senior divisions. Four local high schools with girls’ basketball programs will compete, including O’Gorman High School, Timmins High and Vocational School, École secondaire catholique Thériault and Roland Michener Secondary School. The remainder of teams will travel to Timmins from across Northern Ontario. All games are played at one of the four main high schools or at O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School with the main tournament gymnasium being O’Gorman High School.
The tournament attracts not only players from the North but their parents, spectators and other team supporters to our community. Visitors contribute to the local economy through hotel room stays, restaurants, and general shopping.
Media is encouraged to attend a check presentation, which will take place on Friday, October 28 at 1:50 pm in the O’Gorman High School Gymnasium, right before the first game of the tournament at 2pm. Representatives from the MAT Tourism Grant Committee will be in attendance with tournament organizers. The gymnasium can be accessed via the Jade Avenue entrance.
