Barb Stegemann, a “Top Game Changer” on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, CEO and founder of The 7 Virtues, and a Women’s Executive Network Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada will deliver a keynote address in Timmins.
Stegemann is the keynote speaker at the Timmins Social Enterprise Roundtable February 27th, 2019, hosted by the Business Enterprise Centre and NORDIK Institute, as part of ONE Social Enterprise Partnership, Northern Region (SEE). Barb will share how she launched her social enterprise out of her garage and went on to become the first Canadian brand available in the new “Clean at Sephora” space across Canada and the USA in Sephora.
Barb Stegemann launched her social enterprise after her best friend, a solider, was severely wounded in Afghanistan. She created The 7 Virtues, a perfume company that ethically sources organic, fair trade essential oils from countries experiencing turmoil, and supports these communities with proceeds of the business.
Barb’s compelling story is sure to ignite more social entrepreneurs at the conference by showing them what social enterprise can accomplish,” said Maggie Matear, Director of Community Economic Development at the Timmins Economic Development Corporation “We’re excited to hear her insights on building a successful social business,” she added.
“The event will give entrepreneurs a chance to hear from experts in social entrepreneurship, and some tools to develop a social enterprise of their own,” said Natasha Chalwell, Social Entrepreneurship Events Coordinator at the Business Enterprise Centre.

November 15th is Social Enterprise Day and the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) and the Business Enterprise Centre are helping spread the word. The two organizations are hoping more entrepreneurs will pursue social enterprise as a viable business model.
“Social enterprises use business principles to solve social or environmental problems” said Maggie Matear, Director of Community Economic Development at the TEDC. “They’re typically structured like a non-profit, but all of the profits they generate go towards the social cause, instead of to the business owners.” Greyston Bakery is one example of a social enterprise. They employ at-risk adults without resumes, interviews or applications to help reduce crime, poverty and food insecurity. Greyston Bakery is the brownie supplier for Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream.
The TEDC and the Business Enterprise Centre offer services such as mentoring and training to help entrepreneurs start a social enterprise. “We’re really pleased to be offering these services in the region,” said Natasha Chalwell, Entrepreneurship Coordinator with the Business Enterprise Centre. “Social enterprise is becoming a way for non-profits to address increasing funding pressures,” she added.
The TEDC and the Business Enterprise Centre are hosting a round table on February 27th, 2019 to build awareness of social entrepreneurship.

The latest issue of Working Together, a local labour market plan created by the Far Northeast Training Board (FNETB), states that 76.9% of employers in our region are experiencing staffing issues.
As a result, some firms are halting plans for expansion and restructuring due to increasing employee turnover rates and a lack of applicants. “If you take a walk throughout the business sections of the city or browse online career pages, you’ll notice endless help wanted ads and job postings,” said Julie Joncas, executive director of the FNETB.
To address these issues, the TEDC, the Employers Council and other partners are launching the Employer Recruitment and Retention Strategies Project, funded by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). Jessica West, the project coordinator, will undertake outreach activities and work one-on-one with employers to develop best practices for recruitment and retention.
Mike Resetar, co-chair of the Employers Council said, “This project encourages sustainable growth in our city by reinforcing that fact that Timmins is an attractive place to work and live.” Reports, fact sheets and presentations will be available to help businesses strengthen and retain their workforce and encourage future expansions.

Certarus, a fast growing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) company with strong roots in Western Canada, is moving forward with a $54M multi-site investment in Northern Ontario to service off-grid industrial clients. This expansion into the Ontario market will see new hubs developed in both Timmins and Red Rock and will work to provide mines and mills with the option of a cleaner, more affordable alternative to diesel and propane for heat and power generation.
In addition to the initial capital investment in the region, the new hubs will create 10-15 jobs during the construction phase, 41 permanent full time jobs (25 in Timmins, 16 in Red Rock) as well as 5-10 seasonal jobs during peak seasons once they operate at full capacity. Annual payroll for both sites, once fully operational, is expected to be in the area of $3M.
“We are excited to be expanding into Ontario with our first CNG hub on Highway 101 East in Timmins. The mining and forestry sectors will provide a diversified client base for Certarus and allow us to continue to grow. We are seeing an increasing adoption of CNG to displace diesel, propane and bunker oil to promote cost savings and reduce environmental footprints. Certarus operates the largest bulk CNG trailer fleet in North America and has built over 15 bulk CNG compression facilities across North America.” said Nathan Ough, Vice President of Certarus. “The Timmins Economic Development Corporation provided invaluable assistance in understanding the industrial sectors and connecting us with the resources we needed to establish our hub in Timmins.”
The Timmins Economic Development Corporation worked with Certarus as they explored market opportunities in the region and completed their site selection process. Of the new planned development, Fred Gibbons, Chair of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation Board, said “We’re glad to see this investment in Timmins and we’re looking forward to seeing how this service can help improve operations and reduce the environmental footprint of our mines and mills.”
For users who experience brownouts and blackouts from unreliable electricity supplies, onsite CNG allows for continuous operations. Certarus will provide a service that will assist in increasing client productivity, reduce operating costs, and keep more jobs in Northern Ontario by potentially extending mine and mill life.

The TEDC has reached its funding goal for phase one of a bilingual wayfinding and digital sign initiative, thanks to generous contributions from community partners.
This morning, the TEDC invited members from the Venture Centre, Timmins Museum: NEC, Timmins Public Library, Tourism Timmins, City of Timmins, Downtown Timmins BIA, Tourism Northern Ontario, FedNor and Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership to express thanks for their contributions to this project.
Funds will be used to point out community amenities, such as Hollinger Park, Participark, Bannerman Park, the Sportsplex, the McIntyre Arena, Gillies Lake, downtown parking areas, public washrooms, playgrounds, and service centres.
Effective wayfinding will enhance the city’s attractions and enable people to discover other resources. Mayor Black said, “Having clear and consistent signage that allows visitors and residents to make new discoveries will be a huge asset to the city.” Wayfinding will also encourage alternative modes of transportation, such as walking and cycling. The project aligns with the Timmins 2020 Branding Strategy and beautification initiative by enhancing streetscapes in the city.
This project is proudly supported by FedNor and Tourism Northern Ontario.

Timmins farmers are now growing more produce than ever before because of a new funding program that makes their land easier to farm.
The TEDC, in partnership with the Northeast Community Network (NeCN), has helped regional farmers and producers access tile drainage grants to over 4,000 acres of agricultural land since 2014. The NeCN is anticipating another 1,800 acres worth of land improvement grants this year.
Tile drainage has been used in agricultural infrastructure for centuries, and helps improve water management for crop production, pasture management and soil health. The program allows farmers in the region to extend their growing season, which is typically about a month shorter than that of farmers in Southern Ontario. Productivity enhancements such as these allow for higher yields and enhanced market competitiveness.
Allen Graham, owner of Graham Acres Farm in Timmins, has reaped the benefits of the program, saying, “Since receiving the tile drainage grant, I’m able to grow potatoes and veggies in an area where I would regularly get stuck with my ATV. I can get on the land earlier in the season and have no issues when harvesting crops and produce later in the season.” Since completing the work by a licensed tile drainage contractor, Graham says, “the return on investment has gone from $500/acre to over $2,500/acre.”
The program covers 50% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $500/acre for work completed by a licensed tile drainage contractor. Once the tile drainage work is completed, the project location and land is inspected for conformity to the program and a claim is submitted to reimburse the farmer or producer.

The Timmins Economic Development Corporation(TEDC) and the Timmins and District Multicultural Centre (TDMC) are happy to announce that the Northeastern Ontario Immigration portal is now available in seven languages, including English, French, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Punjabi and Filipino.
The Northeastern Ontario Immigration portal was developed in partnership between the TDMC and the TEDC and launched in June 2017. The two organizations recognized a gap in available resources for newcomers and for those looking to start a life in Northeastern Ontario. The portal helps address issues relating to static and declining populations and provides information about local services and resources.
The portal is mobile friendly and helps organize community information necessary to make settlement decisions. “Having access to services in their first language is an invaluable asset for newcomers,” said TEDC chairman Fred Gibbons. “The TEDC is proud to be part of this initiative and it’s just one of the ways we are working to diversify our economy in Northeastern Ontario.”
Tom Baby, TDMC Coordinator, said “this new tool allows newcomers — whether they’re from Chinatown, Toronto or Beijing, China — to get a sense of a fresh new life in over 30 Northeastern Ontario communities. By attracting newcomers to the region, this tool will help Northeastern Ontario spur growth and innovation.”
This project is funded by the government of Ontario through the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration.
