Timmins, ON: The Business Enterprise Centre is proud host the second-annual Building Momentum networking event on March 23rd, 2016 to support and recognize the success of the young entrepreneurs from the Starter Company Program.
The success was further recognized by the recent announcement of Timmins Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Nova Business Excellence Award finalists. Three previous Starter Company participants were nominated – Dr. Karine A. Briand, owner of Family Eye Care, Kathleen Montigny and Julie Sheldon, owners of Jump City, and Christine Fortier, owner of Natural Health Solutions. Starter Company encouraged the entrepreneurs behind these companies: the community responded by encouraging and supporting the businesses.
Dr. Karine A. Briand, owner of Family Eye Care, says, “The Starter Company program was a great asset in helping me write my business plan. By purchasing an existing business I had all the information needed to write my business plan. Starter Company helped me to organize the information. The program also helped me to further understand my purchase along with set a clear vision for my goals and expectations as a business owner. Their help was truly valuable.”
The Building Momentum networking event will provide an opportunity to wrap-up the past year of entrepreneurship programming, encouraging networking among young entrepreneurs, community partners, and business mentors while recognizing the value of youth entrepreneurship to the region. The event also provides a platform to launch the next year of programming, thanks to funding secured through the Government of Ontario.
Youth entrepreneurship is a critical part of developing vibrant communities and robust economies. In the past year, 48 young entrepreneurs across northeastern Ontario participated in the Starter Company program which provided training, mentoring and the tools necessary to develop their business ideas. This is a 50% increase over the previous year, which saw 24 individuals participate in the inaugural year of the program. In the second year of the program, seven new businesses opened, one business expanded, and nine jobs were created. More businesses are expected to open in the upcoming months. The Starter Company program also offers participants the opportunity to apply for a micro-grant to assist with business costs. In the second year of the program, a total of $39,700 was awarded to eight grant recipients. To date, a total of $59,700 has been awarded to 12 grant recipients.
“The Starter Company program encourages young entrepreneurs to make their dreams a reality, creating economic benefits and improving quality of life in our local communities. The Building Momentum event is a wonderful opportunity for these individuals to network and develop their own entrepreneurial community,” says Fred Gibbons, Chairperson of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation. “We are so proud of the past participants who have moved on to become finalists of the 2016 Nova Awards and pleased that The Business Enterprise Centre will be continuing to host this program and support young entrepreneurs in our region.”

TIMMINS, ON – March 22nd, 2016 – The Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC) continues building productivity and innovation capacity in northeastern Ontario, supporting over 30 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the last year alone.
The PIC provides up to 80% funding for SMEs in northeastern Ontario to have their operations assessed by qualified business consultants. The selected consultant examines ten different areas of a business’s operations to identify opportunities for market growth and productivity improvements.
“This program has been an extremely valuable resource for us. With the help from the knowledgeable staff, we have been able to get our Productivity Assessment as well as our Technology Assessment Report completed. This would not have been achieved without the funding that was provided”, said Brenda Hagerty, owner of Porcupine Canvas in Schumacher, Ontario.
Based on the recommendations of the productivity assessment, the SME can access an additional $5,000 (80% of eligible costs) to capitalize on identified opportunities and improve productivity. Eligible expenses include equipment modernization, developing and implementing an ICT strategy, and workforce training.
“We are currently working towards our ISO compliance to grow our business,” said Hagerty.
“The Productivity & Innovation Centre has provided regional businesses with over $100,000 in funding support since early 2015. This funding has helped companies across the region improve and grow their operations”, said Fred Gibbons, Chair of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation.
PIC also assists SMEs in moving forward with commercialization of products and/or processes. PIC can facilitate access to provincial and federal innovation programming through the Ontario Centres of Excellence, FedNor, NOHFC, and other sources to assist with all stages of business development, from research & development to commercialization.
“The shared office space and collaboration between the Productivity & Innovation Centre and NEOnet enables us to meet the ICT and innovation programming needs of business’s throughout our catchment in northeastern Ontario,” said Paul Ouimette, Director of Operations for NEOnet.

The Timmins Economic Development Corporation in partnership with The Venture Centre is currently leading a project to develop an Age-Friendly Community Strategy for the City of Timmins.
The City of Timmins recently received funding from the Government of Ontario as part of its Age-Friendly Community Planning Grant Program. The funding program supports local governments and community organizations to undertake strategic planning and develop local plans to address aging demographics and enable people of all ages to fully participate in community life.
According to the 2011 Census, 36% of the Timmins Population is now over the age of 50 years. This means that 15,350 of our 43,165 residents are currently over the age of 50.
A Steering Committee comprised of 17 local organizations has been established to lead the project and is looking to engage the 50+ population within the City to obtain their feedback as to how Timmins can become a more Age-Friendly City.
A consulting firm (Paquette Management Services) has been retained to assist the Steering Committee in developing this strategy by conducting research, facilitating consultation with seniors and preparing a detailed summary report.
An extensive consultation process with the local senior’s population has been planned and it is expected that the older adult population will have numerous opportunities to provide their ideas and opinions through a Town Hall meeting, focus groups, interviews and on-line surveys. This consultation process is scheduled to take place in January and February (2016) and this feedback will be used to identify priorities for action and implementation within the City.
Mayor Steve Black expressed “Our seniors have helped shape our great city and I look forward to ensuring the community continues to address the needs of our aging population and ensuring our seniors maintain a great quality of life here in Timmins. The public consultation will be a great opportunity to ensure we continue to listen and address the needs and desires of seniors within our community.”
“Our collective challenge is to ensure our communities grow to meet the evolving needs of every person regardless of their age or ability. This is why age-friendly planning is so important and it’s why we are continuing to work with municipalities, seniors’ organizations and other community partners, to help ensure that seniors can participate fully in community life.”
– Mario Sergio, Minister Responsible for Seniors’ Affairs
It is expected that the Timmins Age-Friendly Community Strategy will be completed in March 2016 and that the ongoing involvement and participation of the local older adult population is vital to the success of this initiative.

Timmins, ON – A new industry will soon be joining the community – enhancing economic stability and diversification. Following months of working with the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) and city staff, Calabrian Corporation announced that it is building a new liquid Sulfur Dioxide (SO2CLEANTM) production facility in the City of Timmins.
“We welcome this new partnership with Calabrian, which brings with it the addition of skilled manufacturing jobs to support Canada’s mining industry and aligns with the Northern Growth Plan. We look forward to the positive economic impact it will have in our community,” said Mayor Steven Black. “I would like to thank the management at Calabrian, local staff at TEDC, Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, and City Hall for helping highlight what our great city has to offer new industry.”
Production is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2016, and once at full capacity the plant will create 20 new positions. Calabrian is also working with the local Bestech Engineering office to design the site, and said they are pleased with the excellent quality of service and expertise they’ve experienced thus far.
“The City of Timmins has been a great development partner for us and we look forward to becoming a part of their business community,” said Calabrian CEO Randy Owens. “Our investment would not have been possible without the support of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation, City of Timmins staff and City Council.”
Representatives from Calabrian will be introduced by Mayor Black during his State of the City address on October 21, 2015 at the Days Inn, Timmins.
What is SO2CLEANTM?
