TIMMINS, ON – The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is hosting the regions first Employer Immigration Week. The programming aims to promote immigration as a solution to the labour challenges employers are facing in northeastern Ontario. The events will educate employers on immigration services and programs, and are ideal for those who have some or no knowledge on the topic. The TEDC’s Employer Immigration Week takes place November 1-4.
“As our region continues to face stringent labour challenges, it is essential that employers and businesses in our region understand what services and programs are available and how they can access them,” said Christy Marinig, CEO of the TEDC.
The Timmins Regional Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) officially expanded to surrounding communities as of September 23, 2022. Communities throughout northeastern Ontario from Hearst to Cochrane to Temiskaming Shores and Foleyet can now participate in RNIP. A map of the new boundaries, can be found here. In addition to the expansion, the program has officially been extended until February 2024.
“The expansion and extension are great news for our region. We look forward to seeing communities outside of Timmins participate and benefit from the pilot program, which has had a great impact on Timmins since its launch in 2020,” said Audrey Penner, Chair of the TEDC Board of Directors.
The TEDC’s Employer Immigration Week events include a combination of virtual and hybrid events to ensure employers throughout the region can learn about the resources and programs available to them. More information on our upcoming events and registration can be found here.

TIMMINS, ON — Research shows that businesses with inclusive workplace practices experience improved employee retention and satisfaction, increased productivity and financial returns, and higher levels of innovation.
The Timmins Workplace Inclusion Charter (WIC) is part of the Timmins Diversity Awareness Project. The Charter promotes building inclusive and welcoming workplaces through a declaration of commitment to diversity and inclusion. It acknowledges that employees deserve to feel safe, respected, valued, and supported at work.
The Charter includes 16 commitments across five categories: Communication, Culture and Leadership, Policies, Recruitment and Onboarding, and Training and Development. By signing the Charter, employers are taking the first step toward becoming more inclusive, and are pledging to actively work toward completing the commitments outlined in the Charter.
Organizations may determine which Charter commitments they wish to prioritize, and develop an action plan to tackle those commitments. The Charter includes tools and resources to help support employers in their journey towards creating more inclusive workplaces.
Interested businesses and organizations can access the Timmins Workplace Inclusion Charter here. The first five organizations that sign onto the Charter will receive a free Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) assessment and results analysis to help kickstart their action plan (to a value of $500)!
This project was made possible in part by the Government of Canada. The Timmins Diversity Awareness Project is one of 85 projects selected across the country to receive funding through the Anti-Racism Action Program, which provides funding for projects that address barriers to employment, justice, and social participation among Indigenous Peoples, racialized communities, and religious minorities.

TIMMINS, ON – The Project Advisory Group leading the Timmins Diversity Awareness Project is pleased to launch a series of videos that highlight the diversity that exists within Timmins and the importance of cross-cultural learning in addressing racism and discrimination. The videos feature local residents sharing their stories and experiences, as well as inspiring messages of how everyone can help foster a welcoming and inclusive community for people from all cultural backgrounds.
“I am extremely happy to have participated in the Timmins Diversity Awareness Project,” said Noémie Rodrigue, a local entrepreneur and one of four residents featured in the video series. “It was very important for me to have the chance to share my story and explain the importance of diversity in our community.”
According to the 2021 Census, the demographic proportion of Timmins who identify as Indigenous is now 14.9%, a 3.5% increase from five years ago. There has also been a positive shift in the number of residents whose mother tongue is neither English nor French, up one whole percentage to 5.5%. This growth is led primarily by increased immigration to Timmins of people speaking Indo-Aryan languages, which include Punjabi and Gujarati.
“Timmins has always been a community made up of different cultures, and every year we are growing more diverse,” said Dr. Audrey Penner, Chair of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) Board of Directors. “It’s this cultural diversity that enriches our community and strengthens our local economy, bringing together people with varied skills, perspectives, and experiences.”
The full-length videos can be watched in their entirety on the TEDC website here.

TIMMINS, ON – Community partners in Timmins will once again be spreading the message of inclusion over the coming week as part of a larger global initiative. Welcoming Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people, places and values that help everyone feel welcome and that they belong in their local community, no matter where they come from. This year Welcoming Week takes place September 9 to 18.
“Our City’s success depends on ensuring that all residents of Timmins feel welcome here,” said Mayor Kristin Murray, proclaiming the week of September 9 to 18, 2022 Welcoming Week in Timmins. “Regardless of where we are born or what we look like, we are members of this community. Let’s come together to recognize the contributions every individual makes to the vibrant diversity we all value, and reaffirm that Timmins is a welcoming community.”
Over the past few years, Timmins has seen numerous cultural groups and organizations form or expand, adding to the City’s growing diversity. Earlier in 2022, the City’s first Sikh temple opened downtown, spurred in part by the increasing international student population from India studying at Northern College. In August, the Filipino Association of Timmins hosted its inaugural Filipino Fiesta, and recently the Timmins Ontario Malayalee Association held its first general meeting.
“Building a welcoming community is essential to the retention of both newcomers and long-term Timmins residents alike,” said Christy Marinig, CEO of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC). “With our population aging and retiring, our local businesses and economy depend on groups typically underrepresented in the labour market, such as Indigenous persons, newcomers, and racialized groups, among others. The more welcoming we are as a community, the more people feel at home here and want to put down roots.”
Throughout the week, the TEDC will be encouraging organizations and businesses to take selfies with a Welcomer sign and post it to social media with the hashtags #WelcomingWeekTimmins and #WelcomingWeek2022, sharing how they are creating a welcoming place for newcomers.
Events throughout the week include:
The IRCC has developed an online toolkit to help communities and organizations participate in Welcoming Week. The toolkit is available in both English and French and can be accessed here.

TIMMINS, ON: The Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) Subcommittee led by the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is pleased to present the Timmins Golf Championship with a check for $7500.
The Timmins Golf Championship is a new venture in the community. Co-chairs of the event Jamie Lamothe and John Elliot said “the goal of this championship is to build a sustainable, long-term event that is shared between both the Hollinger Golf Club and Spruce Needles Golf Club with representation from both facilities.” They added that their vision is to bring the two clubs closer together in collaboration and to drive regional interest from golfers in northeastern Ontario and northwestern Quebec. The MAT Fund grant will go towards promoting the event and help grow the event in future.
Audrey Penner, chair of the TEDC board, said “creating opportunities to drive tourism to the community is financially beneficial for both clubs, and supports our local sports tourism industry.”
The event will take place on June 18th and 19th. Interested parties can find more information on the Timmins Golf Championship Facebook page or by contacting John Elliot at 705-262-4194.
