TIMMINS, ON – The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is launching an online community for nonprofits in Timmins. Moderated by the TEDC, the Facebook group will be open to nonprofit leaders and board members as a place to network, collaborate, and strengthen the local nonprofit community.

“This launch coincides with the start of the newly proclaimed Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week in Ontario, recognizing the vital role nonprofits play in our communities,” said Dr. Audrey Penner, Chair of the TEDC Board of Directors. Recently, the Ontario legislature unanimously passed Bill 9 proclaiming the third week in February each year as Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week, a week to recognize and honour the remarkable contributions of individuals and organizations working to transform the lives of people across the province. The inaugural week will take place from February 14-20, 2022.

“Beyond service delivery, nonprofits are integral to the social fabric of our community and contribute to a healthy and growing economy,” said Christy Marinig, Chief Executive Officer of the TEDC. “Nonprofits provide meaningful employment opportunities, mobilize volunteers, and leverage funding and donations in order to create real impact,” Marinig added.

According to Statistics Canada, there are 58,000 nonprofits and charities operating in communities across Ontario, employing 844,000 people, most of whom (77%) are women. Ontario’s nonprofit sector contributes 7.9% to the province’s GDP, accounting for $65.4 billion in economic impact. In Timmins there are over 150 nonprofits providing essential services across a variety of fields, including mental health and addictions, food security, sports and recreation, and childcare. The TEDC itself is a nonprofit organization.

The Timmins Nonprofit Community Facebook group will provide an opportunity for those working in the nonprofit sector in Timmins to ask questions, learn from each other, share important information, and discuss – and conquer – challenges that are facing those in the nonprofit sector. Those who are interested can request to join by searching “Timmins Nonprofit Community” on Facebook or clicking here.

The TEDC’s Community Economic Development team works with nonprofits, social enterprises, and other organizations to help build capacity, access funding, and achieve their mission. All services provided by the TEDC are free. For more information, contact the TEDC.

TIMMINS, ON – There are countless reasons why Timmins, ON is a great place to live, learn, work and play, but we’ve highlighted the top 10 on our new website: MovetoTimmins.ca.

MovetoTimmins.ca aims to attract young professionals and families from the region and throughout the province. If you’re looking for work, look here! Right now, Timmins has opportunities in mining, forestry, retail, social services and administration, health and many other industries and sectors. A lower cost of living and more disposable income means getting ahead faster and enjoying yourself along the way. Housing costs are lower here than most cities in the province of Ontario which means your cost of living is reduced.

Our tagline “Time for Timmins”, to be shared in our upcoming marketing plan, signifies to our audience that living in Timmins gives you more time to spend with family and friends. We’re capitalizing on our plentiful recreational features including a downhill ski resort, several golf courses, a cross-country skiing facility, 55km of trails and multiple provincial parks and campgrounds within an hour of the city centre.

“It’s our aim that this website and the marketing plan will help to attract young professionals who are either struggling to tap into the housing market or advance in their careers,” said Dr. Audrey Penner, Chair of the TEDC Board of Directors.

“We have experienced an increase in newcomers settling in Timmins in recent years, and as a result of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, we’ve had great success in filling labour gaps,” said Christy Marinig, CEO at the TEDC. “Our effort to promote the city as a great location to find meaningful employment, tap into the housing marketing and establish a family has never been more timely,” she added.

The new site was launched in January 2022, and a forthcoming marketing plan will promote the city to neighbourhing communities and the province.

TIMMINS, ON – The second year of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) in Timmins is complete. In 2021, the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) received over 120 applications and issued 106 community recommendations to candidates. This is up from 2020, which saw over 60 applications and 41 community recommendations.

“This was our first full year of the Pilot and we saw more than double the applications and recommendations, which is just wonderful,” said Dr. Audrey Penner, Chair of the TEDC Board of Directors. “The word is out and employers and job-seekers alike are eager to use the Pilot to fill employment gaps within the city,” Dr. Penner added.

The recommendations issued to candidates span a variety of occupations and industry sectors. In 2021, 33% of candidates held occupations in social, community and government services and 29% in sales and service occupations, which mirrors the local job demand seen on JobsinTimmins.com. Since the launch of the Pilot at the end of April 2020, the majority of candidates have been employed in the health care and social assistance sector (37%), followed by the accommodation and food services sector (22%), and the retail trade sector (18%).

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot is designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities by creating a path to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers who want to work and live in Timmins. The TEDC is assisting employers using the Pilot to address labour demands and fill positions that they have been struggling to fill with Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

“Being a small business, we don’t have a lot of time nor the expertise to navigate through arduous processes associated with typical immigration programs,” shared Sylvie McPhail, Operations Manager at SurveyTECH Instruments & Services, a Timmins-based industry leader in borehole instrumentation. “The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot program couldn’t be further from this. The RNIP process is simple, straightforward and light in terms of required time and documentation needed to participate,” said McPhail.

In the third year of the pilot, the TEDC has a total of 150 recommendations that can be issued in 2022. Employers interested in learning more or participating in the pilot can contact the TEDC.

TIMMINS, ON – The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is pleased to announce the launch of a new Facebook page aimed at promoting film projects in Timmins. TEDC Film Projects, as the page is called, is dedicated to sharing news of upcoming film projects, location scouting, casting calls release dates and more.

The TEDC hopes that the Facebook page will help promote the needs of the film, television and commercial producers to residents who might be able to fill those needs.

“We’re currently location scouting for an empty barn or warehouse, and casting of two twin boys aged 10-14 for a shoot in February and March,” said Noella Rinaldo, Director of Community Economic Development at the TEDC.

The TEDC has previously helped attract film and television projects to Timmins including Two Lovers and a Bear, Pop Whiz, Couleurs du Nord, and numerous car commercials.

“Attracting film production to the north takes the whole community to embrace the industry,” according to Fred Gibbons, chair of the TEDC. “We hope that the residents of Timmins not only support but also participate in this and future productions,” he added.

The TEDC works with the entertainment industry to attract film, television and commercial production shoots to the city. The impact of these projects to a community can be considerable, including supporting local job opportunities, increased economic activity and investment, and contributions to local business associations.

The TEDC is asking residents to like the page and share it with their networks to help spread the word.
