TEDC launches online community for nonprofits in Timmins

TIMMINS, ON – The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) is launching an online community for nonprofits in Timmins. Moderated by the TEDC, the Facebook group will be open to nonprofit leaders and board members as a place to network, collaborate, and strengthen the local nonprofit community.

“This launch coincides with the start of the newly proclaimed Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week in Ontario, recognizing the vital role nonprofits play in our communities,” said Dr. Audrey Penner, Chair of the TEDC Board of Directors. Recently, the Ontario legislature unanimously passed Bill 9 proclaiming the third week in February each year as Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week, a week to recognize and honour the remarkable contributions of individuals and organizations working to transform the lives of people across the province. The inaugural week will take place from February 14-20, 2022.

“Beyond service delivery, nonprofits are integral to the social fabric of our community and contribute to a healthy and growing economy,” said Christy Marinig, Chief Executive Officer of the TEDC. “Nonprofits provide meaningful employment opportunities, mobilize volunteers, and leverage funding and donations in order to create real impact,” Marinig added.

According to Statistics Canada, there are 58,000 nonprofits and charities operating in communities across Ontario, employing 844,000 people, most of whom (77%) are women. Ontario’s nonprofit sector contributes 7.9% to the province’s GDP, accounting for $65.4 billion in economic impact. In Timmins there are over 150 nonprofits providing essential services across a variety of fields, including mental health and addictions, food security, sports and recreation, and childcare. The TEDC itself is a nonprofit organization.

The Timmins Nonprofit Community Facebook group will provide an opportunity for those working in the nonprofit sector in Timmins to ask questions, learn from each other, share important information, and discuss – and conquer – challenges that are facing those in the nonprofit sector. Those who are interested can request to join by searching “Timmins Nonprofit Community” on Facebook or clicking here.

The TEDC’s Community Economic Development team works with nonprofits, social enterprises, and other organizations to help build capacity, access funding, and achieve their mission. All services provided by the TEDC are free. For more information, contact the TEDC.
